Subject: SOB V - Scheduled Launch - Press Release
Greetings area amateur radio clubs,

I am Scott Poole, W4SPA, of Montgomery, AL and I am excited to announce the scheduled launch of our next high-altitude balloon experiment carrying an amateur radio payload. We call our project Stratosphere Or Bust, or SOB (pronounced So-Bee) for short. We have been launching high altitude balloons since 2002 (with varying degrees of success) and our latest payload is ready for launch! The upcoming mission designator is SOB V and the launch date is tentatively set for Saturday, August 30th, with a take-off time of around 7:00 AM (CDT). The launch location will be from about 10 miles South of Montgomery, AL.

I gathered these e-mail addresses by searching for Alabama and Georgia clubs on the ARRL website. If you do not wish to receive e-mail from me regarding this project, please reply to this message and let me know and I will remove your address from my list. If however, you and your group are interested in this sort of activity, please give this message widest dissemination.

We are looking for individuals or groups that are interested in helping with this and future flights by listening for and/or recording our APRS and telemetry data and our CW ID RDF beacon. The evening before launch, we will run flight path prediction software which uses winds aloft data from the National Weather Service to predict our balloon's flight path and landing location. Using this prediction, we will deploy mobile chase team members down-range near the landing site. Since this is just a prediction and there are many factors which can cause the flight to vary greatly from it's predicted course, we'd like to involve as many other area amateur radio operators as possible. Our thinking is the more ears we have listening for the signal, the greater the chance of recovering the payload.

In the next couple of weeks, I will be sending out additional e-mails to this list with more details about the flight including frequencies, etc.

On behalf of the entire SOB team, thanks in advance for your interest and assistance.

73,

Scott Poole, W4SPA
Montgomery, AL
