      Yes,

There will be a NEW Repeater in Brewton for you to use.

I have been thinking about getting up another repeater in Brewton ever since Hurricane Ivan hit us so bad. Some may say why do we need 2 repeaters when the one we have right now does not have enough of traffic on it. This is a good point. Right now when the weather is clear and the everything is ok we don't. I am preparing for the future.

If you remember when the Southern Baptist Food Kitchen came to town during Hurricane Ivan they relied on the 97 repeater very heavy. They passed messages back and forth to the chainsaw crews out in the Brewton area. Many of us had to go to 146.520 simplex to stay in contact. So the Southern Baptist could use the repeater. It worked fine as long as we were in the Brewton City limits and in a car or at home. Using an HT across Brewton on 146.520 would not work.

I have been in contact with the Southern Baptist also known as "SouthBEARS" and told them that they can use the new repeater that I am going to set up. Yes, I will be setting up a 440 repeater. I was granted a frequency pair about 2 years now. I have been holding the frequency pair and testing an old repeater that I could never get to work.

In about 3-4 weeks the repeater under the call KI4GGH will be operating from my home. This repeater WILL NOT take the place of the 146.970 repeater. I will be the first to admit it will not. The range of my 440 repeater will be less than the range of the 97. If I get half I would be thrilled.

The 440 repeater will be able to do one thing that the 97 will not be able to do. The 440 will be able to access Echolink. Right now local repeaters in the area that are on Echolink are Opp, Monroeville, Mobile, Bay Minettte, Ft Walton Beach and Montgomery. Soon Brewton. Can you imagine setting at your home in your lazy boy and talking to someone in Montgomery on a HT. You could even talk to some one in Japan with a 5x9 clear signal. The Echolink part of the repeater may be another 5-6 weeks off. Just have to lay some more High speed DSL Line and hook it to the repeater when I get it. When the time comes I will pass out the DTMF codes to you so you can access the other repeaters across the world.

In the future once I know the repeater can stand on it's on during a storm I will approach the Red Cross and tell them about it. I know in the past the Red Cross asked the Brewton club to staff shelters. We declined as a club because we did not have enough of operators to staff the shelters. With the new 440 repeater up and running we will have one card on the table. We can offer the use of the 440 repeater plus now we are testing in Brewton. So the possibility of The Red Cross using a repeater in Brewton is getting closer. It would be a win win situation for us as well as the Red Cross. The Red Cross could test shelter workers in Brewton and have use of the 440 repeater when the time comes. The Red Cross Shelter traffic could be on the 440 at the same time others could be using the 97 repeater.

The repeater will be at my home and on my tower and running 24 hours a day. A full fledged repeater. I already have a UHF antenna mounted and 1/2 inch hard line to the antenna. The repeater will be powered by a battery during power outages. The 440 repeater as I type this email is being built in the sate of Washington. Once I get up and running and all of the bugs out I will email you the frequency. Right now I am planning on running no tone. I may have to add a tone in the future.
