Subject: FOXHUNT 2008-02
Last Sunday Foxhunt coordinator KL7HV, Clyde kicked off the 2008 season with an impromptu Sunday hunt. He may be fairly new to living in this area?but after he was shown a variety of possible PUBLIC PROPERTY places to hide? he did a great job of nesting behind a bunch of OTC busses parked on the City property where our old club meeting place was in the Elder Services building. It proved that Amateur Radio Operators can be mobilized quickly and can find a hidden or lost transmitter in less than an hour.
NOARC FOXHUNT 2008-02?.SUNDAY FEBRUARY 3, 2008.
All Foxhunters will meet at the Radio Shack parking lot on highway 90West in Crestview between 12noon and 12:55pm. If you have never taken part in an Amateur Radio Foxhunt? come on out and pair up with another NOARC Member that is experienced and has a Foxhunt antenna. Bring a good City of Crestview street map with you to help keep track of where you are, where you have been and places you might want to check out.
W4GMH, Cal will be this week?s fox. He?ll have his new Icom800D on the air from his radio van as well as his HT60. The ?FOX? will transmit an audio message for 30 seconds out of each minute on 144.600. The NOARC Foxhunters will use their directional antenna?s and HT?s to try to find the hidden ?FOX?. We will monitor the Crestview W4AAZ repeater at 147.360. The FOX will start out with 55 watts, then reduce to 15, then to 5?then to the HT on the Rubber Ducky antenna? so once you start hunting?you better get as close as you can.
Everyone will be asked to head out in different directions at 12:55pm?.and the Fox will start transmitting at 1:05pm?.and will send out tantalizing clues every minute until one of the Foxhunters finds him.
Once you hunters get a direction find on W4GMH? report to KL7VH on the repeater your position and the bearing you have on the FOX. Let?s see how fast everyone can map out where the FOX is hiding!
NOARC President N4CU, Bob sent out an email to the NOARC mailing list earlier this week with a detailed drawing of a Foxhunting antenna that is very easy and low cost to build. Our next NOARC meeting is at 7pm on the 4TH THURSDAY of the month, February 22nd at the Dorcas Fire Station about 8 miles east of Crestview on Highway 90. WE4VGB, Steve will give us a hands-on program and several of these Foxhunting mini-beams will be made.(right before your eyes!)
If you are among our newer licensed hams? Foxhunting is a fun and easy way to learn about one of the many activites Amateur Radio Operators enjoy. And there is also a very practical purpose to Foxhunting. Knowing how to use direction finding skills can be used to find improperly operating stations, find someone that is stranded or lost. And it?s a good way to get to know other ham operators in our area.
After the hunt is over we?ll all gather at the Burger King on Highway 90 just a little east of the Radio Shack. We?ll debrief the hunt?and VERY IMPORTANT? Determine if there will be enough FOXHUNTERS in town on Sunday February 10th to do another hunt. That is the weekend of the BIG Hamfest in Orlando and many of you will be there.
I have discussed our Foxhunting project with NOARC President N4CU, Bob and we are excited to see the activity? but also curious to know if we can sustain more than one hunt per month. Your participation this Sunday the 3rd, and your comments after the hunt will help determine that answer. And certainly we?ll have a better idea of possible future participation after the February 22nd meeting.
Come on out Sunday? join the fun?. Meet some other Amateur Radio Operators?.and FIND THE FOX!
